The law changed, and most houses have not caught up
Smoke alarms are the one piece of electrical work where the requirement is explicit and the consequence of ignoring it is not financial.

What a smoke alarm installation actually covers
Placement matters more than the hardware. Where alarms go decides how much warning you get, and the standard is specific about it.
- Assessment of what is installed now, how old it is, and what the property actually requires.

Why alarm placement matters more than alarm count
An alarm in the wrong place is worse than useless, because it produces false alarms and then somebody takes the battery out. Alarms too close to a kitchen or a bathroom trigger on steam and cooking. Alarms in a hallway corner sit in dead air and respond slowly.
Correct positioning is the difference between a system that wakes the house and one that gets disabled within a month. It is also the part of the job most often got wrong by whoever fitted them last.
The three types, and which one to fit
Photoelectric
What we fit as standard, and it is not a close call. Photoelectric alarms respond much faster to smouldering fires, which are the ones that happen overnight while people are asleep. They also produce far fewer nuisance alarms from cooking.
Hardwired with battery backup
Mains powered, so there is no annual battery to forget, with a backup battery for outages. Required in homes built or substantially renovated since August 1997, and the right choice in any home where the ceiling can be accessed.
Battery only
Acceptable in older homes that have never been rewired, and far better than nothing. Ten year sealed lithium units remove the annual battery change and the temptation to pull one out when it chirps at two in the morning.
Interconnection is the part people skip
Interconnected alarms all sound when any one of them detects smoke. It matters because a fire starting in the kitchen has to wake somebody asleep at the far end of the house, and a single alarm two rooms away will not do it through a closed door.
Interconnection can be wired or wireless. Wired is more reliable and is straightforward while a ceiling is accessible. Wireless is the practical answer in a house where running cable would mean opening up plaster.
Rentals and compliance
Rental properties in Victoria carry their own obligations, including alarms that are tested and working at the start of every tenancy. We install and test to the requirements and leave a written record of what was fitted and where, which your managing agent can keep on file.
Alarms have a ten year service life printed on the back of the unit. Past that the sensor has degraded whether or not the alarm still beeps when you press the button.

Alarms are installed to AS 3786 and positioned to the requirements that apply to your building. Homes built or substantially renovated since August 1997 require mains powered alarms with battery backup, and interconnection is required in newer construction. Rental properties carry their own obligations under the Victorian rental minimum standards, including that alarms are tested and working at the start of every tenancy.

My alarm chirps even with a new battery. Why?
Almost always because the alarm itself has reached the end of its life. The sensor degrades and the unit is designed to tell you. Ten years is the rated life and it is printed on the back of the unit.
Do I legally need hardwired alarms?
It depends on when the house was built or last substantially renovated. Anything from August 1997 onwards generally requires mains powered alarms with battery backup. Older homes can be compliant with working battery alarms, though hardwired and interconnected is far better protection.
What does interconnected actually mean?
Every alarm sounds when any one of them detects smoke. It matters because a fire starting in the kitchen needs to wake somebody asleep at the other end of the house, and a single alarm two rooms away will not do it.
