Switchboard upgrades
Ceramic fuses replaced with circuit breakers and safety switches, with capacity left for what you add next.
Hawthorn East is where we are based, at 25 Carnarvon St. It is the one suburb where we can often be there within the hour during business hours.
Hawthorn East is where the van is parked. We have worked out of Carnarvon Street for years, which means most of the housing stock here is familiar before we arrive, and it means we can usually be there quickly.
The streets between Auburn Road and Camberwell Road are mostly Edwardian weatherboard and interwar brick. The pattern we see repeatedly is a house that was partly rewired at some point, often when a kitchen or bathroom was done, leaving newer cable on those circuits and original cable everywhere else. Nothing about that is unsafe on its own. It becomes a problem when someone assumes the whole house was done.
Rubber and cloth insulated cable from the interwar period survives perfectly well until it is disturbed. Installing downlights, laying ceiling insulation or running a new data cable is often what triggers the fault, which then appears a week later and seems unrelated. If you are planning anything in the ceiling, have the existing cable looked at first. It costs far less than finding out afterwards.
Along the Camberwell Road and Burke Road edges there are dwellings above shops, and they commonly share metering or a supply with the tenancy below. A new cafe fitout downstairs can change the electrical behaviour of the flat above. When a shop-top starts tripping shortly after the ground floor tenancy changes hands, that timing is the clue.
Plenty of blocks here run long, with a garage, studio or bungalow at the back. Those are typically fed by a submain sized decades ago for a light and a socket, now running a home office. Lights that dim at the rear when a heater cycles are the classic symptom, and the answer is a correctly sized submain rather than a different heater.
This suburb renovates constantly. The cheapest moment to run a circuit is while the plaster is off, and the most expensive is once the kitchen is in. If you have builders booked, a short conversation at the framing stage usually saves more than it costs.
We are in the suburb. Same-day attendance is the norm and we can frequently be there within the hour during business hours. For genuine emergencies we aim to be on site within two hours at any time, and the phone is answered around the clock.
We also cover Hawthorn, Camberwell, Kew, Glen Iris.

25 Carnarvon St, Hawthorn East. It is a workshop rather than a shopfront, so ring before coming past. Being local is the reason Hawthorn East, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Kew are the suburbs we reach fastest.
In Hawthorn East, usually yes, and often within the hour during business hours if the day allows it. Ring rather than filling in the form if it needs to be today, because the phone gets you a real answer about timing.
Yes, and it is worth knowing before rather than after. Cable of that age goes brittle and fails when it is disturbed, so a fault often appears a week after the work rather than during it. We check the existing cable in the affected part of the roof before cutting any holes.
By looking. Cable type, the switchboard, and what is visible in the roof and subfloor together tell the story fairly quickly. We write down what we find and which circuits are original, so you have a record rather than a guess.
Yes. Retail and hospitality fitouts, exit and emergency lighting, and test and tag are regular work for us along Camberwell and Burke Roads. We work outside trading hours where a shutdown would cost you customers.
Fastest way to get an answer is the phone. It is answered 24 hours a day, seven days.
