Switchboard upgrades
Ceramic fuses replaced with circuit breakers and safety switches, with capacity left for what you add next.
Glen Iris is about four kilometres from our workshop in Hawthorn East, which makes it one of the suburbs we get to fastest. Most Glen Iris jobs are attended the same day.
Glen Iris is unusual before you even get to the wiring. The suburb is split across three councils, Boroondara, Stonnington and Monash, and the housing changes noticeably as you cross those boundaries. That matters to us because the electrical faults change with it.
The core of the suburb is Californian bungalows and interwar brick from the 1920s and 1930s, and the typical history is one switchboard replacement some time in the 1980s and nothing since. Those 1980s boards brought in circuit breakers but usually no residual current device, or one covering the power points only, with lighting and the stove left unprotected. The house then acquired ducted heating, a second bathroom, a dishwasher and a wall oven, all landing on a board with no spare ways. This is the most common job we do in Glen Iris, and it is usually a switchboard upgrade rather than anything more dramatic.
Glen Iris blocks run deep, and a lot of them have a studio, a converted garage or a bungalow at the rear. Those are very often fed by a submain run decades ago, sized for a light and a power point, now supplying a home office with a heater and a fridge. Voltage drop over a long undersized run makes appliances behave oddly at the far end and is frequently blamed on the appliance. If the lights at the back dim when the heater cycles, that is the submain talking.
Properties on the flatter ground near Gardiners Creek tend to have damper subfloors, and damp subfloors are where nuisance safety switch tripping comes from. Moisture works into old cable at junctions and the RCD does exactly what it is built to do. People replace the safety switch, the tripping continues, and the actual fault is under the floor. Testing the circuits properly is cheaper than a second device.
The dual-occupancy and townhouse developments that have gone in over the past fifteen years bring a different set of problems: separate metering, supply capacity shared across the site, and boards provisioned for exactly the plan with nothing left over. Adding an EV charger to one of these means checking what the site supply can actually carry, not just what the individual board looks like.
Closer to the Kooyong and Hawthorn East borders there are Edwardian and late Victorian homes where parts of the original wiring survive in the roof space. Rubber-insulated cable of that age goes brittle and fails when it is disturbed, so the fault often appears a week after someone installs downlights or adds ceiling insulation. If that describes your house, get it looked at before the next renovation rather than during it.
We are in Hawthorn East, roughly a ten minute run to most of Glen Iris outside peak hour. Same-day attendance is normal for faults reported in the morning. For genuine emergencies, a power outage, burning smell or exposed wiring, we aim to be on site within two hours, and the phone is answered 24 hours a day. We also cover neighbouring Camberwell, Ashburton, Malvern and Hawthorn East.

Period homes with cloth or rubber-insulated wiring brought up to AS/NZS 3000, in stages if needed.

Dead circuits, tripping safety switches and power points that run warm, traced to the cause.
A written check of the board, the wiring and the safety switches, for a purchase, a rental or peace of mind.

It is the most common situation we see here. Those boards usually have circuit breakers but limited residual current device coverage, often on the power points only. They also tend to be full, so there is nowhere to put a new circuit. It is not an emergency, but it is the first thing to fix before adding load.
Almost always voltage drop on an old submain to a rear bungalow or studio. Those runs were sized decades ago for a light and a power point, and Glen Iris blocks are long. The fix is a correctly sized submain, not a new heater.
Yes. The council boundary makes no difference to us. We cover the whole of 3146 and the surrounding suburbs, including Ashburton, Camberwell, Malvern East and Kooyong.
For a simple replacement, often. For anything touching the switchboard, the mains or wiring of unknown age, no. We look first and then give you a fixed price, and the estimate is free.
Fastest way to get an answer is the phone. It is answered 24 hours a day, seven days.
