Switchboard upgrades
Ceramic fuses replaced with circuit breakers and safety switches, with capacity left for what you add next.
Prahran is about six kilometres from our Hawthorn East workshop, roughly fifteen minutes outside peak hour.
Prahran is tight. Small lots, narrow frontages, laneways at the rear and a dense retail spine running through the middle of it. The recurring theme in the electrical work here is lack of physical space, not lack of capacity.
A single-fronted Victorian terrace gives you a frontage of a few metres, no side access and a meter position that was chosen when the installation had three circuits. Fitting a modern board with circuit breakers, residual current devices and room to grow into that space is the actual challenge, and it is usually solved by relocating the board rather than by squeezing.
Above the shops on Chapel Street, Greville Street and Commercial Road there are flats that share a building, and frequently a supply, with the tenancy below. When a new operator fits out the ground floor, the flat above can start behaving differently. If your trouble began around the time the shop downstairs changed hands, that is the first thing to check, and it is not a fault inside your flat.
Many Prahran properties have a garage or studio opening onto a rear lane, fed by a submain run across the block years ago. Those runs are old, often undersized, and sometimes not protected to current standards. If the studio has become a workspace rather than storage, the supply to it deserves a look.
The kitchens and bars here sit in compact tenancies inside older buildings. The constraint is rarely the design and nearly always the supply the tenancy already has. It is answerable in a short visit before a lease is signed, and expensive to answer afterwards.
Food premises bring refrigeration, exhaust and wash-down areas, which means real loads and real residual current device requirements. Testing to prove a safety switch trips within the required time, rather than pressing the button on the front, is the part that matters and the part most often skipped.
About fifteen minutes from Hawthorn East outside peak. Morning faults are normally attended the same day. For genuine emergencies we aim to be on site within two hours, with the phone answered 24 hours a day. Commercial work runs outside trading hours where a shutdown would cost you customers.
We also cover South Yarra, Armadale, Toorak.

New tenancies, relocations and make-good, coordinated with your builder's programme.
Portable appliance and safety switch testing on the interval your environment requires.
Dead circuits, tripping safety switches and power points that run warm, traced to the cause.
New outlets, USB points and outdoor weatherproof power, added on a circuit that can carry them.
Usually relocation. A board built for three circuits does not physically hold a modern one, and forcing it produces a cramped installation that is awkward to work on later. We look at what is possible in place first and price the alternative so you can choose.
Probably not. Shop-tops here often share a building supply with the tenancy below, so a new fitout downstairs changes the electrical picture upstairs. The fault is frequently not inside your flat at all, which is worth establishing before anyone starts replacing things in it.
Yes. The existing submain is usually old and sized for storage rather than for a working space. We check the run length and the load you intend to put on it, then size the replacement properly rather than matching what is there.
With an instrument, measuring trip time and trip current. Pressing the test button proves the mechanism moves, which is not the same as proving the device trips fast enough to protect somebody. A device that trips slowly passes a button test and fails a real one.
Before you sign. A short visit tells you whether the supply will carry the equipment, and that is the answer that decides whether the site works at all. Afterwards it becomes a supply upgrade and a delayed opening.
Fastest way to get an answer is the phone. It is answered 24 hours a day, seven days.
